40th Reunion Redlands Facts Write Up
Class of '65 keeps the music playing' at 40-year reunion
0 Comments | Redlands Daily Facts, Oct 27, 2005
REDLANDS Members, spouses and guests of the Redlands High School class of 1965 spent the weekend of Sept. 3, celebrating their 40th reunion. With a theme of 'Keep the Music Playing,' 155 members reconnected and reminisced during the weekend of activities.

The weekend began with a bus tour of scenic and historic areas of Redlands before the official reunion party. Tour narrator and historian Larry Burgess took the group through old and new haunts, while entertaining with his usual wit and knowledge.

Classmates met at Redlands Country Club at 6 p.m. for happy hour and some time to view the displays of memorabilia which included old football programs, newspaper articles, notes from classmates who could not attend, Hobachi (school newspaper) samples and a memorial to class members who had died.

Classmate Gregory Gomez remembered deceased classmates and veterans before conducting a traditional Apache blessing, assisted by his daughter, Dahazi Gomez Williams.

During dinner, Night Life Productions of San Bernardino entertained the crowd with popular 1960s music, which was echoed by the table centerpieces that featured vintage 1960s record album covers nestled in blue and white carnations, lit with votive candles.

Julie Kalman Fuller introduced and thanked reunion committee members Diane Kramer McCalmon, Linda Kooiman Serros, John Hurst and Steve Hauser along with several others who assisted in putting together the festivities.

She passed the mike to the master of ceremonies for the evening, Steve Hauser, who conducted a table competition of high school trivia. During the program, prizes were awarded for such accomplishments as longest married (Sherry Hill and Les Cowan), traveling the farthest (Karen Berkheimer Cross of Hawaii), most unusual place to have lived (Dyanna Cridelich in Katmandu) and most recently retired.

Hauser introduced and recognized two special guests: Billie Daniels, retired RHS drama teacher, and Wes Reed, retired Redlands Junior High band teacher.

To cap the evening, Hauser asked Lenore Legg Will to lead the singing of the alma mater while he accompanied on his guitar.

Sunday morning featured a casual reunion brunch at the Carriage House in Prospect Park catered by Gerrard's Market. It was announced at the brunch that Dyanna Cridelich and Julie Kalman Fuller would coordinate creation of a Redlands High School 1965 Web site that would include event pictures and message boards.

(Courtesy Photo)With the theme 'Surf's Up!' 180 members and guests of the Redlands High School Class of 1965 celebrated their 45th reunion weekend this fall.

As class members and guests arrived at the Redlands Country Club, they were greeted by two vintage cars holding surfboards at the entrance.

The mood was relaxed and fun, with men in Hawaiian shirts and women in flowered sundresses or pants outfits.

The highlight of the evening was entertainment by The Tornadoes, a surf band that originated in Redlands in the 1960s. The band everyone dancing from the first song until the last.

Tables were decorated with centerpieces handcrafted by Rita Cox Elenburg of a beach scene with real sand, seashells, a woodie with surfboard on top, palm trees and flowers.

Steve Hauser was master of ceremonies, and kept the group entertained during breaks with various giveaways. The country club served a beach barbecue buffet.

A 50-50 drawing, organized by Linda Luetcke Bennecke and Peggy Beauregard, raised more than $800, with half going to three ticket holders and the other half designated for children's programs at the Burrage Mansion.

The Burrage Mansion is owned by RHS 1965 classmates Tim and Carol Rochford. The day after the Saturday evening reunion, classmates met at the Burrage for a casual brunch and a history talk by Larry Burgess, director of the A.K. Smiley Public Library.

Ellen Timothy, executive director of the Rochford
Foundation, also spoke about the programs offered to local disadvantaged youth at the property. Classmates enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the restored beauty of the home.
The Class of '65 will continue fundraising efforts through its Project Boomerang for Kids as a way of giving support to ongoing programs at Burrage for disadvantaged children in the area.
